On August 8th, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was un-welcomed to Salinas High School by members of the American Federation of Teachers, Monterey Bay Central Labor Council, Watsonville Brown Berets and other demonstrators. With an escort of police in cruisers and on motorcycles, Schwarzenegger’s vehicle drove past a group of protesters and into a back entrance of Salinas High. Police quickly locked out the people who, in the theory of US Democracy, are supposed to be represented by the Governor. Read more and view photos

Amnesty International Vigil for a Ceasefire in Israel and Lebanon
On August 7th, local Amnesty International (AI) members organized an emergency ceasefire vigil at Lighthouse Point on the westside of Santa Cruz. The vigil, which coincided with vigils in more than 30 countries, called for a ceasefire in Israel and Lebanon, all governments to stop the supply of arms to the conflict and solidarity with the victims and survivors from both sides of this conflict. AI asked people to respect the nonpartisan tone of the vigil while other people felt AI should have made a clear call for a ceasefire and an immediate Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, Gaza and the West Bank. Iraqi War Memorial in Santa Cruz on Hiroshima Day
On August 6th, members of the Buddhist Peace Fellowship of Santa Cruz used the Hiroshima Day anniversary to draw attention to the casualties of the war in Iraq. All day at the corner of Center and Lincoln Streets, the group displayed a three foot tall, hundred foot long, scroll listing 40,000 names of Iraqi civilians killed in the war. There was also a pair of booths created which listed the names, photos, and brief stories, of over 2,000 US and coalition soldiers who also died in the war. Read more and view photos
Weapons Inspection Team Dismantles the Bomb
On August 6th, the Santa Cruz Weapons Inspection Team (SCWIT) dismantled a Trident II D5 nuclear submarine missile during a skit on the Pacific Garden Mall to mark the 61st anniversary of the U.S. nuclear bombing of Hiroshima. A 4,400 acre Lockheed Martin facility at the end of Empire Grade in Bonny Doon manufactures and tests Contained Detonating Fuses (CDFs) for the Trident II D5 nuclear submarine missile. This is the third year that SCWIT has organized activities commemorating the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, on August 6th and 9th, 1945. Read more and view photos
State of the Word; The Future of Online Publishing
On August 5th, the first ever WordCamp took place at the Swedish American Hall in San Francisco. Users and developers of WordPress, a fantastic blogging software, were able to meet each other face to face to discuss the State of the Word and envision the future of online publishing.
WordPress.org describes WordPress as, “a state-of-the-art semantic personal publishing platform with a focus on aesthetics, web standards, and usability. WordPress is both free and priceless at the same time.” Read more and view photos
