Hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets and marched to demand the immediate departure of Ulises Ruiz Ortiz (URO), liberation for political prisoners, the cancellation of 70 government arrest warrants for people involved in the leaderless Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca (APPO, by its Spanish initials) movement and the desire for popular governance. Oaxaca is Closed in Solidarity with APPO

poder-al-pueblo.jpgOaxaca City is almost entirely closed today… I am the only tourist staying at my hostel today… even the Zocalo is eerily quiet… The radio transmissions for Radio La Ley were cut-off sometime during the (early morning hours). Radio La Ley, a corporate radio station owned by … Clear Channel, was recently taken over in solidarity with Asamblea Popular del Pueblo de Oaxaca (APPO). Supporters of AMLO Declare, “No al Pinche Fraude”

zocalo_8-19-06.jpgOn August 19th, 20th and 21st, I walked around various sections of the planton set up throughout Mexico City. Many working class people from all over Mexico have travelled to Mexico City to demand a full recount of the votes cast during the national election which took place on July 6th. Shouts of “voto por voto, casilla por casilla” (vote for vote, ballot box for ballot box) are heard everywhere as these people believe a recount will change the official results of the presidential election. Encuentro Against All Borders – Building a Radical No Border Movement

The No Border Encuentro took place on August 27-28th at the Sherman Heights Community Center in San Diego/Aztlan. Two days of events including a maquiladora tour, a benefit concert and a day of forums, panels and encounters took place with over 100 people from San Diego, Los Angeles, Fresno, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Orange County, Eugene, Portland, Tijuana, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia participating. On the walls hung photos of recent actions to stop the Minutemen, a poster of the PGA Hallmarks, and maps of Calexico, where the No Border Camp will be in September.
