Signs of Solidarity with the South Central Farm

Santa Cruz activists have been busy like bees in preparation for Sunday’s rally in solidarity with South Central Farmers. Folks living in the Santa Cruz area, some of which have been down to the South Central Farm in Los Angeles, are inspired by the SCF and dedicated to spreading awareness and solidarity for the South Central Farmers; Campesinos that have been cultivating 14 acres of land and feeding hundreds of families in South Central LA for 14 years. On Saturday, July 8th, a day before the 2:00pm rally at the clock tower and march through Santa Cruz, signs and posters were created by artists and activists. Over 30 events in solidarity with the South Central Farm are taking place from July 7th-10th in locations ranging from Oakland and Chicago to Athens, Greece and Australia. Read more and view photos

Surveillance Camera Walking Tour in Downtown Santa Cruz

On April 30th, I attended Free Skool Santa Cruz’s Surveillance Camera Walking Tour. After meeting at the Clocktower, we walked up Mission Street to get a bird’s eye view of the downtown. Our class started off with about a dozen people, including professor Winston Smith. In addition to pointing out cameras, our lesson for the day was to discuss various types of surveillance and the effects it has on individuals and society. We will also take a peek into the loss of public space and personal privacy on Pacific Avenue.

The Mendocino Model: Californians Support Sustainable Agriculture!

On March 6, 2004 residents of Mendocino County passed Measure H, banning the planting of Genetically Engineered (GE) crops — also known as Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) — within their county. The measure is now being used as a model in at least a dozen other counties in California where local residents are well on their way to passing similar measures. Organizers in Butte, Humboldt, Marin and San Luis Obispo counties have already collected enough signatures to place measures on the November ballot. Californians feel that local measures seeking to ban the cultivation of GE crops are critical steps toward economically and ecologically sustainable agriculture.

California farmers produce more than 350 varieties of crops and export more than any state in the US. Although California is recognized as a world leader in organic food production and sustainable agriculture, the world’s largest biotechnology companies are attempting to force GE crops onto California’s farms. Genetic engineering poses a significant risk to the environment, our food supply and the economic health of farmers.
