On April 7th, 2007, an antiwar rally was held at the Oakland docks to mark the fourth anniversary of the Oakland police attack on protesters, longshoremen and journalists.
Organizers of the event outlined the following key points:
* Stop war shipments.
* Port money for schools & social services.
* Bring the troops home now and give them the healthcare they need.
* Express solidarity with Tacoma protestors who are trying to stop war shipments.

On February 16th, 2007, a protest targeting Sam Farr, Representative for the 17th Congressional District, was held at the Santa Cruz County Building. In a comment posted on Santa Cruz Indymedia, Steven Argue explained the primary reason behind the protest, “While Sam Farr has voted against supplemental war appropriations, He has voted for well over a trillion dollars in “defense” (actually war funds) since the beginning of the Iraq war. Besides being used to put the world in terror of U.S. corporate interests through the massive military machine of the United States government, that money has also been used to directly occupy Iraq.”
The first big protests of the 2006-2007 school year at UC Santa Cruz took place on October 18th, 2006, the day the UC Regents came to visit campus. It had been five years since all 26 UC Regents came to UCSC. During the second demonstration of the day by hundreds of students outside the new Humanities Building at Cowell College, police pushed, swung and jabbed with their batons before taking three students hostage and hurling streams of pepper spray directly into the eyes of demonstrators.
On October 2nd, 2006, the 38th anniversary of the Tlatelolco Massacre, I spoke with Shannon Young, Headlines Producer for Free Speech Radio News, who lives in Oaxaca City, Mexico. The 1968 student massacre at Tlatelolco in Mexico City sets a creepy undertone for the military provocations currently taking place in Oaxaca City which include low-flying marine helicopters. Shannon also discusses MegaMarches, the march from Oaxaca City to Mexico City and the technicalities of getting Ulises Ruiz Ortiz (URO) to leave office.
With only 24 hours of notice, people from all walks of life were invited to an emergency Reclaim The Streets protest in response to the recent mass-arrest of 107 immigrants in Santa Cruz, Watsonville and Hollister. On September 15th, a Reclaim The Streets protest marched from the post office down Pacific Ave and all around the Beach Flats. Not knowing how the Beach Flats community would respond to the protest, demonstrators raised their fists and chanted against deportations and la migra. Community members were happy and a bit surprised by the demonstration. Some people asked why nobody came through the neighborhood with flyers announcing the protest…
