Shame on Israel, Shame on US, Stop the Bombings!

On August 4th, advocates of peace and justice gathered on the corner of Front and Water Streets in downtown Santa Cruz to denounce US backed Israeli mass murder of Lebanese and Palestinians. At least twice as many people demonstrated at the clock tower in support of Israel. Members of the International Socialist Organization (ISO), ANSWER Youth & Student and UCSC Students Against War (SAW) called for a, “Shame on Israel! Stop the bombing!” demonstration while the Santa Cruz Chapter of Stand With Us and Santa Cruz Hillel organized the “Pro-Israel Demonstration / Shame on Israel counter-rally” in supporting Israeli occupation and genocide in Lebanon and Palestine. Interfaith activists stood on a third corner, Pacific and Water, calling for “Peace Now” a “Cease Fire” and a “Turn To NonViolence.” Read more and view photos

Developers Don’t Give A Fuck About Us

On July 9th, about 60 people paraded through downtown Santa Cruz as part of the international days of solidarity with the South Central Farm in Los Angeles. Marchers carried colorful anti-development signs and banners, handed out leaflets, taped posters up everywhere, and played improvised drums.

A majority of sidewalk onlookers were curious and willing to read the handouts, and a few joined in. The rally began at the clocktower and grew in numbers until spilling out on to Front St. Comfortably filling most of the asphalt, the assembly proceeded down Front to Laurel Street, turning to come back northward up the crowded Pacific Avenue drag and finally ending in a courtyard area across from the Post Office. Marchers congregated in the courtyard to listen to speakers, announcements, and a statement from the farmers, broadcasted from the mobile bike cart PA system. Read more and view photos

Flag Burn: Fan the Raging Flames of Freedom

On July 3rd, fiesta mysteriosa hosted Santa Cruz’s 2nd Annual Old Time American Flag Burn at Seabright Beach. The celebration was a B.Y.O.F. event. Before the burning and melting of more than a dozen American flags, people gathered around the fire pit to share their personal feelings and beliefs about burning American flags. It is legal to burn American flags, however the burning of US currency is illegal. Dollar bills, powerful symbols of global capitalism, were also burned, despite the illegality of the act. 2,500 U.S. Troops Killed… And Counting

On June 16th, US Veterans For Peace, Methodists United For Peace and other individuals held a vigil in Santa Cruz to mark 2,500 U.S. troops killed in Iraq and countless dead Iraqis. People held banners and peace flags in front of the town clock before marching down Pacific Avenue. We were joined mid-march by Hare Krishnas that had been chanting and dancing on the corner of Soquel. The march paused at Laurel and Pacific before returning to the plaza by the post office for a final peace circle. Read more and view photos

Military Recruiters Evicted From UCSC Job Fair, Again!

On April 11th, 2006, about 200 students marched and rallied to get the military out of UC Santa Cruz. Students rallied outside the McHenry Library before marching to the Job Fair held at College 8. This is the third time in a row that the military has been confronted by large student demonstrations while trying to recruit at UCSC Job Fairs.
