ASA Santa Cruz County Holds First Fundraiser at Trout Farm Inn

On August 28, 2010, the new Santa Cruz County chapter of Americans for Safe Access (ASA) held a fundraiser at the Trout Farm Inn on E. Zayante Rd. in Felton, CA. It was the local chapter’s first public event.

Americans for Safe Access, based in Oakland, is the largest member-based organization of patients, medical professionals, scientists and concerned citizens working to ensure safe and legal access to cannabis for therapeutic uses and research. ASA works in partnership with state, local and national legislators to create policies that improve access to medicinal marijuana for both patients and researchers. ASA claims to have over 30,000 active members with chapters and affiliates in more than 40 states.

Gail, a member of the Wo/Man’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana (WAMM) who was born with glaucoma and is blind, was grateful for the opportunity to meet and socialize with others who benefit, physically and mentally, from cannabis. As an eighteen year old student at UC Santa Cruz, Gail was passed a joint for the first time. That is when she discovered that marijuana eases the pain she experiences from glaucoma.

Eben Kirksey’s Call to FRSC About Possible Voting Irregularities in Felton

A visit to Diebold’s corporate headquarters in Ohio by an IMCista.

On November 2, 2004, Eben Kirksey published an article on Santa Cruz Indymedia voicing concern about his voting experience in Felton. I spoke with Eben shortly after he published on SC-IMC and he explained that his main concern was the use of pencils to fill out ballots at his polling station, despite signs posted inside the polling station insisting on the use of special graphite pens.

After speaking with Eben, I called the Santa Cruz County Clerk so they could explain the use of pencils in the polling station and for a clarification on the legality of political clothing inside the polling station.

Felton FLOW Panel on Water Privatization

On September 23, 2004, Felton FLOW (Friends of Locally Owned Water) organized a film screening of Thirst at the Rio Theater in Santa Cruz, CA. Thirst is a new documentary that examines community water conflicts on three continents. ‘Thirst’ demonstrates that popular opposition to the privatization of water ignites remarkable coalitions that cross partisan lines. When it comes to water, many people demand local control and fear the arrival of multinational corporations with large lobbying budgets and little local accountability.

Thirst also shows that the individual struggles of these communities raise the same profound questions: Is water a human right for all people? Or, is it a commodity to be bought, sold, and traded in a global marketplace?

After watching Thirst, a six speaker panel discussed water issues around the world with a focus on Felton, a rural community in the Santa Cruz mountains. For more information on Felton’s struggle for community controlled water resources, visit FeltonFlow.org. Also visit ThirstTheMovie.org.
